Font Size: - Large - Small The Bell Tower, is a stately traditional building, that marks the geographical center of the ancient capital. From this important landmark extend East, South, West and North Streets, connecting the Tower to the East, South, West and North Gates of the City Wall of the Ming Dynasty. The wooden tower, which is the largest and best-preserved of its kind in China, is 36 meters (118 feet) high. It stands on a brick base 35.5 meters (116.4 feet) long and 8.6 meters (28.2 feet) high on each side.

The keys permit a carillonneur to perform on the instrument that also can be operated by a computerized, automatic system to ring out the hour and half hour, and special music such as The University of Mississippi alma mater.

News Los Angeles Times (Southland) - October 16, 1964 Design for UCR Tower Selected Will Serve as Focal Point for Student Affairs RIVERSIDE - The winning design for a clock and bell tower to grace the University of California campus here was announced Thursday by UCR Chancellor Ivan H. Hinderaker Picked from six entries was a design submitted by Jones and Emmons, a Los Angeles architectural firm. The 176-foot tower will be built of reinforced concrete and precast grill work in a sunken plaza with reflecting pools in the central area of the campus northwest of the library.
